She has performed Sri Chinmoy’s music in more than 50 countries, all over the world and most recently in Bangladesh where we she played with the acclaimed Rezwana Chaudury Bonnya and the children from the slums. Sahana’s passion lies in music education and when she began working in music education, she became aware that musical opportunities were seriously lacking in the lives of most young Londoners. Since then, Sahana has taught instrumental music to more than 1000 children and is constantly inspired by Sri Chinmoy’s wonderful poem, ‘We are all truly unlimited if only we dare to try...’
In 2000, starting with a small group of children, Sahana created the 51st State Band for young people. From humble beginnings, the band has grown to well over 100 young musicians. In her work as Director of the 51st State Band, Sahana dedicates many hours of her time each week to nurturing what is now one of the largest community concert bands in London. With acclaimed performances in the Royal Festival Hall, the children in the band, aged from eight to eighteen, work with unity and devotion. What makes Sahana exceptional is not only her genius in bringing out the inherent musical abilities in children, but her ability to turn her vision for them into reality. Sahana is currently in the process of opening the World Heart Beat Music Academy - an academy to specialize in World Music to bridge cultural, economic, political and linguistic barriers.

Sudhira’s main source of inspiration and encouragement was her meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy. ‘I was fortunate to tune pianos for him to play in performance a few times. Sri Chinmoy’s style was improvisational and very powerful. One of my favourite performances was at St John’s Riverside Church in Manhattan, USA. Sri Chinmoy loved to play the piano, mixing improvisation and melodies of different songs that he had composed. His improvisations had such depth and musical range from very gentle and ethereal melodies to highly energized explosions of power.’
